BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior David Nelson (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored a pair of goals as the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team (1-1-1) defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology (2-2-0), 5-1, in non-conference action Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The hosts had a pair of opportunities early, with their first shot attempt blocked and, early in the second minute, had a corner kick. Wentworth countered with a shot attempt in the ninth minute from senior Jacob Dukeshire (Nashua, N.H.) that went wide of the mark.
  • At the 11:57 mark, the Bears tallied first on a goal from Nelson. Bridgewater State nearly went ahead in the 17th minute, however, a Leopard defender cleared the ball away before it reached the goal line.
  • Wentworth got the equalizer at the 17:34 mark as senior Nile Keiller (Bowie, Md.) served a corner kick towards the box where Dukeshire put home his four marker of the season. Keiller put a shot on goal in the 21st minute that was saved by Bear graduate student William Russell (Sandwich, Mass.).
  • While the Bears had a bevy of shot attempts in a short span, only two went on net, both of which were saved by senior Noah Lawless (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.).
  • The hosts took a 2-1 lead with three minutes left in the half when freshman Thomas Terry (South Yarmouth, Mass.) tipped a pass to classmate Matthew Furtado (Dartmouth, Mass.). Furtado sent a long ball to freshman Nicholas Ribeiro (Bellingham, Mass.), who beat Lawless to the near side.
  • Early in the second half, Wentworth had a chance to tie the game, however, junior Christopher Jimenez's (Doral, Fla.) attempt was stopped by Russell. Russell threw the ball downfield to sophomore Gavin Norton (Bellingham, Mass.) who, after a run down the sideline, sent a pass to senior Will Halben (Attleboro, Mass.) who gave the hosts a 3-1 lead at 52:06.
  • With 9:51 remaining, Bridgewater State upped its lead to 4-1 as Nelson scored his second of the game, assisted by Terry and sophomore Ryan Healy (Cork, Ireland). The hosts rounded out the scoring with 2:35 left when senior Joseph Kingara (New Bedford, Mass.) scored.
  • Lawless made seven saves for the Black & Gold while Russell turned aside two for the Bears. Bridgewater State had a 23-6 shot advantage and a 9-2 edge on corner kicks.
