BOSTON, Mass. – In narrow fashion, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team (2-6, 0-2 CCC) was edged by Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Western New England (1-3-4, 1-0-1 CCC) on Saturday by a 2-0 score.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After being gifted two corner kicks within the first ten minutes, the Golden Bears found the back of the net shortly after their second corner try as sophomore Matt Spruill (Enfield, Conn.) sent a hard shot towards an empty left side of the goal, giving the visitors a 1-0 edge early.
  • Wenworth had their chance to knot the score late in the first half as a shot by freshman Alex Burnham (Gilmanton IW, N.H.) was blocked and led to a corner kick, with the corner kick not leading to a threat.
  • WNE again applied the pressure early to start the second half, having a header saved by senior Noah Lawless (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) just 1:54 into the frame. Another header just under five minutes later went wide.
  • The Leopards found their next chances to tie it in the 64th and 67th minutes, having two corner kicks by Burnham deemed unsuccessful. Wentworth had two shots on goal following, with both being saved by freshman Braylon Casinghino (Brimfield, Mass.).
  • WNE doubled their lead with four seconds left on the clock as sophomore Brennan Johnson (Wethersfield, Conn.) found himself behind an aggressive Leopards defense and potted the insurance marker, giving the Golden Bears a 2-0 conference win.

NEXT UP:

  • The Leopards hold down home turf next on Tuesday against WPI.
