Men's Tennis Rallies to Defeat Gordon, 5-4

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Joel Vastl's (North Salem, N.H.) win at number six singles snapped a 4-all tie and helped lift the Wentworth men's tennis team to its third straight win, a 5-4 triumph over Gordon in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference match.

The Leopards (5-6, 4-5 TCCC) took a 2-1 lead after doubles play as sophomore Juan Rodriguez (Quito, Ecuador) teamed with junior Nate Gove (Scarborough, Maine) for an 8-3 win over senior Carl Quinion (Westerville, Ohio) and sophomore Nate Musser (Madison, Wis.) at number one doubles and sophomore Dave Filar (Wolcott, Conn.) teamed with sophomore Tim Nguyen (Windsor, Conn.) for an 8-3 win over freshman Kenneth Gaudio (Miller Place, N.Y.) and senior John Cornwall (East Berlin, Conn.).  The Fighting Scots (8-8, 4-5) earned their lone doubles point at number two, where sophomore Gary Gaudio (Miller Place, N.Y.) teamed with junior Eric Musser (Lake Grove, N.Y.) to defeat freshman Thuan Nguyen (Randolph, Mass.) and Vastl, 8-4.

Rodriguez gave Wentworth a 3-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Gary Gaudio before Gordon took the next three matches to take a 4-3 lead.  Quinion beat Thuan Nguyen, 6-2, 6-2, at number two singles, Eric Musser defeated Filar, 6-1, 6-4, at number four singles, and Nate Musser defeated Tim Nguyen, 6-3, 6-1, at number five singles.

Wentworth tied the match at the number three singles flight as Gove defeated Kenneth Gaudio, 6-4, 6-3.  Vastl took the first set over Cornwall, 7-6, with a 7-2 win in the tie breaker before giving the Leopards the win with a 7-5 win in the second set.
