Men's Tennis Drops 9-0 Decision to Suffolk

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team suffered its first defeat of the season as the Leopards were blanked by Suffolk, 9-0, in a non-conference match played at Buckingham Browne & Nichols.

With the win the Leopards slip to 2-1 on the season while the Rams claimed victory in their season-opening match.

In doubles play, sophomore Gaurav Tilva (Windsor, Conn.) and freshman Seng Ly (Lynn, Mass.) were defeated by Suffolk's Thay Thao and Vassili Stroganov, 8-1, at number three. Freshman Nate Schwartz (Chester Springs, Pa.) and sophomore Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) fell to Francesco Saia and Drew Reilly, 8-3, at number two. Sophomore James Drum (Madison, Conn.) and freshman Matthew Smith (Pelham, N.H.) were defeated, 9-7, by Marc Winkler and Calixto Romero at number one.

Romero defeated Schwartz at number two singles, 6-1, 6-1, before Stroganov clinched the win for the Rams with a 6-3, 7-5 win over freshman Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.) at number four.

Winkler defeated Drum, 6-2, 6-4, at number one, Reilly defeated Ly, 6-3, 6-3, at number three, and Saia defeated Peter, 6-3, 7-5, at number five. Tilva dropped his first set against Thao, 6-0, before recovering to tie the match with a 7-5 win in the second set. Thao completed the Rams' sweep with a 10-5 win in the tiebreaking set.

The Leopards travel to Eastern Nazarene on Saturday.
