The Leopards took the first game, 7-1, and held on for a 1-0 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE:  Wentworth 7, Regis 1

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

Wentworth Pitching Leaders:  Kayla DeMedeiros ((W, 3-1), 6 IP, 1 run, 6 hits, 3 strikeouts); Erin Hancock (1 IP, 0 runs, 0 hits, 1 strikeout)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After two scoreless innings, Wentworth broke through with a single run in the top of the third. Freshman Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.) led off with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.). Howe moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from senior Briana Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.). Pina was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second and both moved up on a groundout. However, a groundout ended the inning with two left in scoring position.
  • Regis tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as senior Sarah Fawcett (Londonderry, N.H.) led off single and came around to score after an error on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Madison Smith (Malden, Mass.). The Pride had runners at first and third with two outs, however, DeMedeiros  induced an inning-ending groundout.
  • The Leopards took the lead in the top of the fifth, thanks to one swing of the bat from Pina. With two outs, Beverly singled and Pina followed with a towering home run that cleared the scoreboard. Wentworth tacked on four runs in the top of the seventh. Beverly led off with a double and went to third on an error after Pina reached on an error. Pina stole second and with one out, freshman Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Rowe doubled in Beverly and Pina and with two outs she came in to score on an RBI single from DeMedeiros. Back-to-back singles from senior Ceilidh Higgins (Medway, Mass.) and Howe loaded the bases and Pettenger reached on an error which scored DeMedeiros.
  • DeMedeiros picked up the win (3-1), allowing one run on six hits and striking out three in six innings of work. Hancock pitched a perfect seventh, striking out one. At the plate, Beverly was 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored, Pina was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, Rowe was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI, and Higgins was 2-for-4.

Wentworth Pitching Leaders:  Erin Hancock ((W, 3-2); 7 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 4 K)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth threatened first in the nightcap when Pina hit a two-out double in the top of the first inning. However, a groundout ended the inning. Regis put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the second but Hancock induced an inning-ending double play to end the threat.
  • In the top of the third, freshman Kayla Richard (High Point, N.C.) led off with a double and went to third on a passed ball. Pride freshman Kate McGrath (Boston, Mass.) got three groundouts to leave her at third and keep the game scoreless.
  • The Leopards broke the ice in the top of the fifth inning. Hancock led off with a single and went to second when Richard reached on an error. A strikeout on a wild pitch moved both runners up 60 feet and Pettenger drove Hancock in when she grounded out. The Black & Gold nearly doubled their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Junior Julia Bollentin (South Kingstown, R.I.) hit a one-out single and went to second when senior pinch hitter Aurora Wilks (Fruitport, Mich.) grounded out. Senior Sabrina Haarstick (Bellingham, Mass.) singled, however, Bollentin was out trying to score.
  • Regis junior Kalya Morrill (Lynn, Mass.) led off the home half of the seventh with a single. Smith reached on an error, putting runners on first and second. Junior Ciara Collins (Lynn, Mass.) sacrificed both runners up a base for the first out. Hancock got the next batter to foul out and, down to their final out, the Pride hit a popup to Bollentin who made a tough catch to end the game.
  • Hancock improved to 3-2 on the season, allowing zero runs on four hits and striking out four. At the plate she was 1-for-3 with a run scored while Pina was 2-for-3.
