Softball Rolls Past Simmons

Softball Rolls Past Simmons

BOSTON, Mass. – On a frigid Carr Diamond Friday evening, the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (8-8) made the most of their opportunities against the Simmons Sharks (4-13) offensively, besting the crosstown rival by 6-2 and 8-1 scores in non-conference play to push their win streak to four games.

GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 6, SIMMONS 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After some feeling out in the opening innings, Wentworth got on the board in the third as a double by freshman Kelsey Medalia (Tacoma, Wash.) drove home a run by sophomore Kyla Igawa (Long Beach, Calif.), marking a 1-0 edge.
  • Simmons responded, knotting the score and taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth as a double with the bases loaded by sophomore Emily Deleault (Manchester, N.H.) drove home two of the three runners.
  • In the fifth inning, a double by Igawa with two runners on base in scoring position drove both home, regaining the Leopards' one-point lead at 3-2. Later in the inning, Igawa ran home on a throwing error by the Sharks, marking a 4-2 score.
  • The Black & Gold padded their lead in the sixth inning as a triple by freshman Brianna Miller (West Haven, Conn.) drove home a run, pushing the lead to 5-2. A groundout later in the inning with Miller on third drove her home, extending the lead to 6-2.
  • Sophomore Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) shut down any attempt for the Sharks in the seventh frame, notching her tenth strikeout of the day for the last out with the bases loaded. Offensively, Igawa led the Leopards, going 3-3 with 2 RBI, followed by Miller who had two hits.

GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 8, SIMMONS 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth took a 1-0 advantage in the second inning as a triple by junior Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) ran home a runner on base. In the third inning, however, the Sharks knotted the score as junior Raya Anderson (Rollinsford, N.H.) ran home from third as the Leopards caught a base runner stealing from first to second.
  • The Leopards regained their one-point lead in the back half of the inning as a sacrifice fly by junior Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.) with two runners on base drove one home, marking a 2-1 edge. A single by Kranz in the fifth would drive home a score by graduate student Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.), marking a 3-1 score.
  • The hosts stretched their lead in the sixth inning as senior Annabelle Hebard (North Attleboro, Mass.) capitalized on an error, extending the lead to 4-1 before an Igawa double later drove home two more scores, pushing the lead to 6-1.
  • Wentworth continued their run in the sixth inning as another error drove home a score by junior Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.). Later in the inning, another sacrifice fly by Kranz brought home Igawa, raising the score to 8-1.
  • Rowe was dominant in the circle across a whole game, striking out two batters and only giving up two hits and one run. Igawa and Rowe both tallied two hits while Kranz supplied 3 RBI.
