BOSTON, Mass. – In a pair of defensive showcases Wednesday afternoon, the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (12-12, 2-2 CCC) split a pair of conference meetings with the Curry Colonels (10-12, 1-5 CCC), shutting out the opposition 4-0 in game one before being clipped 2-1 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 4, CURRY 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Leopards got on the board in the back of the opening frame as a single by freshman Kelsey Medalia (Tacoma, Wash.) drove home junior Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.) from second, marking a 1-0 score.
  • Wentworth doubled their lead in the second inning as a single by Howe drove home senior Annabelle Hebard (North Attleboro, Mass.), who reached on an error, to raise the score to 2-0.
  • The hosts doubled their lead yet again in the fifth as a pair of ground outs with runners in scoring position led to runs scored by Medalia and freshman Linnea Carlson (Amston, Conn.), marking a 4-0 game.
  • Sophomore Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) dominated in the circle for her eighth win of the season, striking out six and only surrendering four hits. Offensively, Medalia led the Leopards with two hits and added an RBI.

GAME TWO: CURRY 2, WENTWORTH 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth took an initial lead in the first inning as a sacrifice fly by junior Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.) drove home a score by Howe, marking a 1-0 game early.
  • Curry knotted the score in the second inning as a triple by freshman Renee Gonneville (Saco, Maine) drove home a runner in scoring position, tying the game at one aside. The Colonels took a 2-1 edge in the third frame as a double by senior Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) brought home another runner.
  • The Colonels shut down the Leopards the rest of the way, leaving four base runners stranded across the next four innings. Junior Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) struck out four in the circle in a complete game. At the plate, sophomore Kyla Igawa (Long Beach, Calif.) paved the way, going 3-for-4.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Wentworth has taken five of the last eight meetings between the two teams.
