BOSTON, Mass. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (14-12, 4-2 CCC) dominated the Gordon Fighting Scots (7-19, 2-6 CCC) in game one of their doubleheader, 5-0, being led by a near no-hitter by sophomore Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.), before clipping the conference foe, 3-2, in the second tilt.

GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 5, GORDON 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Leopards broke the scoreless tie in the first inning as a single by freshman Kelsey Medalia (Tacoma, Wash.) with two runners in scoring position drove home one, marking a 1-0 lead. Wentworth doubled their lead in the third frame as a single by Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.) with runners in similar positioning drove home another, marking a 2-0 score.
  • With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, an error by the Fighting Scots along with a fielder's choice managed to drive home a score by graduate student Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.), extending the lead to 3-0 before another single by Kranz later in the inning drove home another two scorers, pushing the advantage to 5-0.
  • Schriver nearly posted a no-hitter before having the bid broken in the seventh inning. However, the sophomore struck out nine and only surrendered the one hit in the win. Junior Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) led the offense with three hits while Kranz notched three RBI on two hits.

GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 3, GORDON 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Black & Gold did damage in the second inning as a single by junior Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.) with two runners on brought one home, pushing the lead to 1-0 before a single by Pettenger drove home the other, extending the score to 2-0.
  • The Fighting Scots knotted the game at two aside in the third inning as a double by junior Ami Rivera (Concord, N.H.) drove home a run before she later stole third and scored on an error following.
  • The Leopards managed to break the knot in the fifth inning as a ground out ran home a score by Rowe, giving the hosts a 3-2 edge. However, Schriver came in for the last two innings, picking up the save and striking out one batter to preserve the win.
