BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Brianna Miller (West Haven, Conn.) popped five hits, including a double, across two games as the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team split a Sunday series with crosstown rival Suffolk by 7-3 and 6-2 scores.

With the split, the Leopards move to 20-16 (8-6 CCC), notching their third straight 20-or-more win season. The Rams, also vying for postseason play, move to 17-21 (7-9 CCC).

GAME ONE: SUFFOLK 7, WENTWORTH 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Rams jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning as initially, with the bases loaded, a triple by freshman Julia Mills (Westborough, Mass.) plated all three runners, marking a 3-0 score before a single by sophomore Bella Rocha-Mederios (Acushnet, Mass.) brought home Mills.
  • Suffolk stretched their lead to 6-0 in the second frame as sophomore Maddie Southers (Mystic, Conn.) and junior Jolie Quintana (Lynn, Mass.) blasted a solo home run apiece. The hosts added to their lead in the fourth, capitalizing on a wild pitch combined with an error to extend their lead to seven.
  • Wentworth clawed into the score in the fifth inning as a double by senior Annabelle Hebard (North Attleboro, Mass.) with the bases loaded plated two runs, cutting the deficit to 7-2. Later, a ground out drove home another run to cut the lead to just four, but Suffolk stood pat through the rest of the contest to hold off the Leopards.
  • Freshman Brianna Miller (West Haven, Conn.) clocked in for three hits while Hebard followed with two hits and two RBI. In the circle, sophomore Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) took the loss, striking out one across just over three innings of work before sophomore Hayley Hines (Lantana, Texas) struck out another batter in relief.

GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 6, SUFFOLK 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With two runners on, a double by Miller ran one home in the second inning, giving Wentworth a 1-0 lead before a fielder's choice and an error at home later brought home two more scores, pushing the lead to 3-0.
  • Suffolk narrowed the deficit to just one in the back half of the inning on an error with two runners on base and a sacrifice bunt with another two on, with a runner scoring on each play to mark a 3-2 game.
  • The Leopards pushed their lead back out in the third inning as a single by Miller with two runners on plated one, marking a 4-2 score before errors later in the inning with two runners on base ran home one on each, extending the lead to 6-2.
  • In the circle, Rowe struck out three en route to her ninth win of the season. Freshman Kelsey Medalia (Tacoma, Wash.) led the charge at the plate with three hits while Miller followed with two hits and two RBI.

  • The Leopards have grabbed four of the last five matchups against the Rams.
