INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Freshman forward Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.), who tied for the team-high with 15 points and had a double-double on the night, got the Leopards started in the first with a three pointer to get the first points of the game. With the Wentworth holding a 4-1 lead midway through the first quarter, sophomore guard Nattaly David (Hyde Park, Mass.) added a basket to give the home team a five point advantage. Back-to-back three pointers in the closing moments of the quarter tied the game at 10, but a late layup by David put the Leopards ahead by a 12-10 score after one.
  • Another basket by David to start off the second extended the Wentworth lead to four, but a three pointer by Curry cut the deficit to one with just over three minutes gone by in the quarter. A basket from junior guard Abriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska) made it a 16-13 game, but another shot from beyond the arc from the Colonels tied the game with six minutes to go in the second. Two baskets from Curry's Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.), leading all scorers with 22 points on the night, picked up back-to-back baskets to give the Colonels a four point lead. After junior guard Francesca Farrell (Stoneham, Mass.) and Smith traded threes, a 6-1 run put the Leopards ahead by one with under two minutes to go. A pair of late free throws gave the visitors a 26-25 lead going into the break.
  • Four straight points from freshman forward Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) helped Wentworth retake the lead in the opening minutes of the third. After Curry pulled within a point, Amoddio made two straight baskets to extend the lead to 33-28. Foster then hit a layup and followed it with a three pointer as part of a 12-2 run to put the Leopards 11 with three minutes remaining. Back-to-back threes from freshman guard Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) followed, but the Colonels answered with two threes of their own to close out the quarter, as the Leopards held a 49-37 lead going into the fourth.
  • Five straight points to start the final period pushed the Leopards' lead to 17 points, their largest of the game. But the Colonels started to trim the lead, starting an 11-4 run in which three different players scored for the visitors. Senior guard Kayla Kelley (Boston, Mass.) put in a layup following a Wentworth timeout, giving the home team a 60-49 lead with five minutes remaining. The teams then traded a pair of baskets, as the Leopards hung on to their 11-point advantage with under three minutes to go. A pair of baskets, including a three from the Colonels with less than a minute left cut the Wentworth lead down to seven, but the Leopards were able to maintain their advantage from that point, adding a few late free throws to finish with an eight point victory at 70-62 and earn their first conference win of the season.
