INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The teams traded baskets early in the first, as two points from freshman forwards Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) and Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.) brought Wentworth to a 4-4 tie after four points from Endicott's Sarah Dempsey (Windham, N.H.). A pair of jumpers from Olivia Duncan (Essex Junction, Vt.) gave the Gulls the lead, but another basket by Amoddio drew the score even at 8-8 halfway through the quarter. Foster then gave the Leopards a four point lead, putting in back-to-back layups, but seven straight points, including four from Dempsey, put Endicott ahead 17-14 after one.
  • The Gulls were able to create distance in the second, as the home team opened up the quarter on a 9-2 run. Emily St. Thomas (Sterling, Mass.) provided five points over the run that spanned over four minutes. Three free throws cut the deficit to seven at 26-19, but four straight points pushed the lead to double digits for Endicott. However, the Leopards answered moments later. Freshman guard Brooke Carlson (Contoocook, N.H.) hit a pair of baskets, and a free throw from Foster brought Wentworth within five with just over a minute remaining. But Endicott got it right back, scoring five unanswered to close out the half with a 35-25 advantage.
  • Endicott continued to roll to start off the third quarter, as St. Thomas converted an and-one, followed by another basket from the Gulls as the home team took a 40-25 lead in the opening minute. After neither team was able to convert over the next few minutes, Endicott made another basket to stretch their lead to 17. But Wentworth came back quickly, as junior guard Francesca Farrell (Stoneham, Mass.) and Foster hit back-to-back shots from beyond the arc, pulling the Leopards closer at 44-33 just past the halfway point of the third. But eight straight points for the Gulls over the next two minutes, finished off by a pair of layups from Tara Laugeni (Woodbridge, Conn.), who led all scorers with 15 points, broke it open, as Endicott took a 19 point lead. Amoddio came back with a three pointer for Wentworth, and a last-second basket from the Leopards helped them to close out the quarter by scoring the last five points, but Endicott still held a 52-38 lead going into the final period.
  • Following an early three from the Gulls to start the fourth, the Leopards made a pair of threes themselves, as Farrell and freshman guard Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) knocked down the two shots, bringing the Leopards to within 11 points. After another basket from Endicott, Wentworth came back with two more baskets, as a pair of layups cut the lead to single digits at a score of 57-48 with 4:25 to go. A jumper by Amoddio pulled the visitors within eight with under three minutes left, but that was as close as the Leopards would get. Dempsey made a jumper in the final minute to extend the lead to 10, as the Gulls claimed a 63-53 victory.
