Women's Basketball Falls to UNE on Senior Day

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team closed out the regular season Saturday afternoon, as the Leopards fell 80-30 to the University of New England.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Nor'easters scored the first eight points of the game, including four from Allie Goodman (Durham, Maine), who scored 15 on the day. Freshman forward Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) got the Leopards on the board with a pair of baskets, and added a layup moments later to get Wentworth within seven points at 13-6. UNE closed the quarter out with four straight points, taking a 17-6 lead into the second.
  • The visitors kept up the offense in the second, going on a 14-2 run that spanned the first four minute of the period. Abby Cavallaro (South Portland, Maine), the game's leading scorer with 20 points, scored the majority of the points during the stretch, as she hit a trio of three pointers to give the visitors a 31-8 lead. A jumper by sophomore guard Nattaly David (Hyde Park, Mass.) gave Wentworth their first points of the quarter, but the Nor'easters came back with 10 straight, as Goodman scored four more during the streak. David connected on another basket in the final seconds, but UNE held a 41-12 lead at the break.
  • The Nor'easters were shooting strong to start the third. The visitors connected on four three pointers were dominant on each end of the floor. Kaylee Beyor (Hinesburg, Vt.) scored four, while Cavallaro added eight and Jordyn Franzen (Salem, N.H.) hit two shots from beyond the arc. UNE shot 57.9 percent from the field and 75 percent from three in the quarter, and outscored the Leopards 28-6, taking a 69-18 lead into the fourth.
  • Senior forward Samantha Cormier (Rochester, N.H.) hit a three to start the fourth quarter for Wentworth, but again UNE came back, scoring eight unanswered points. Foster added three points and David put in a long distance shot, but the Nor'easters claimed victory, winning the matchup 80-30.

THE SERIES 

  • The teams competed for the 41st time Saturday, as the Nor'easters now hold a 39-2 record in the series.

NEXT UP

  • Wentworth now looks ahead to the CCC Tournament, where they will face Nichols College in the first round. The Leopards will travel to Dudley, Mass. Monday, Feb. 21 for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Bison.
