Foster's Double-Double Leads Women's Basketball's Battle Against Nichols

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) tallied a double-double (27 points, 17 rebounds) for the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team in a high-scoring affair against Nichols, with the Bison coming out with an 89-79 conference victory Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth opened the scoring just over a minute and a half into the day when senior Abriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska) scored a layup. The Bison answered with four points of their own and Busbey made two free throws to tie the score at four-all. Senior Kiera Fernandes (Franklin, Mass.) put the Bison ahead by two until Foster knotted the score at 6-6. The two teams traded baskets, working up to a 14-13 lead in Nichols' favor, until a three from junior Abrianna Vazquez (Dedham, Mass.) extended their lead by three. Wentworth ended the quarter on a 7-0 run that included a three from sophomore Brooke Carlson (Contoocook, N.H.) to put themselves ahead 20-17.
  • Nichols scored the first six points of the second quarter, followed by a three from junior Nattaly David (Hyde Park, Mass.), to tie the score at 23 apiece. Nichols scored another seven unanswered, including another three from Vazquez, to give themselves a 30-23 lead. Wentworth rattled off a 9-0 run, including a three from sophomore Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.), to put themselves ahead 32-30 until a layup from Nichols tied the score. The Leopards went on a 7-2 run to give themselves a 39-34 lead, but six-straight from Nichols shortly thereafter gave the Bison a 40-39 lead at the half.
  • Nichols scored six-straight to start the third quarter, with three-pointers coming from Fernandes and freshman Alyvia Smith (Fitchburg, Mass.), to put themselves ahead 46-39. The teams traded points to work up to a 48-45 score until a layup by Foster brought the Leopards within one. Nichols rattled off the next six points to extend their lead to 54-47. Baskets were traded to a 56-51 score until a three from Foster brought the Leopards within two at 56-54. Nichols then went on an 8-1 run, with a three-pointer from senior Erin Cann (Billerica, Mass.) included, to hold a 64-55 lead after three quarters.
  • A Foster layup started the scoring in the final quarter, bringing the score to 64-57. However, Nichols scored eleven-straight points, with five coming from Vazquez, to take a 75-57 lead. Wentworth answered with an 8-4 run, powered by six points from Foster, to bring the score to 79-65. The two teams traded baskets, with Wentworth cutting the deficit to ten on a David three-pointer at 84-74, until Nichols eventually held the lead to 89-79 final score.
  • Foster led the Leopards with 27 points and 17 rebounds. Fernandes led all scorers with 29 points, followed by Vazquez with 28.

  • Nichols leads the all-time series, 23-17, winning the last six matchups.
