Salve Regina Tops Women's Basketball

NEWPORT, R.I. – Sophomore Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) led all scorers with 24 points while the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell to conference-foe Salve Regina 61-45 Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Seahawks started the game with the first basket, a three by junior Amanda Folan (North Attleboro, Mass.), to go ahead 3-0. The Leopards cut the deficit to 3-2 with a layup by sophomore Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine). The Leopards went up 6-3 with two baskets by sophomore Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.) before the Seahawks scored eight-straight points to hold an 11-6 lead after the first quarter.
  • Three points by sophomore Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) cut the Leopards' deficit to two at an 11-9 score to start the second quarter. A three from senior Morgan Shuey (Corning, Iowa) extended Salve Regina's lead to 14-9. The two teams traded baskets while the Seahawks extended their lead to eight in a 27-19 score at the half-way mark.
  • The Seahawks scored the first four points of the third quarter that were quickly answered with two points by Foster, marking a 31-21 score. After a Seahawks score, Foster drained a three to make the score 33-24. The two teams traded baskets to a 40-28 score until senior Abriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska) drained a three for the Leopards to bring them within nine. The Seahawks outscored the Leopards 3-2 to end the quarter ahead 43-33.
  • Salve Regina opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run that included a three from sophomore Ashley Rourke (Londonderry, N.H.), extending their lead to 52-33. The Leopards answered with a three from Foster to put the score at 52-36. After another Seahawks basket, junior Olivia Martin (Hanson, Mass.) scored a three to extend their lead to 57-36. The Leopards answered with five-straight points, with three coming from Foster, to make the score 57-41. After two free throw makes for the Seahawks, Foster sank another three to make the score 59-44. The two teams traded free throws while the game ended in a 61-45 score.

SERIES NOTES:

  • The Seahawks lead the all-time series, 58-7.
