Women's Basketball Opens 2024 Against Western New England

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Graduate student Lindsey Carey dropped (Greenfield, N.H.) a game-high 23 points as the Western New England Golden Bears women's basketball team (8-3, 3-1 CCC) rolled past the Wentworth Institute of Technology (2-4, 0-2 CCC) 79-29 Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Golden Bears opened the evening outscoring the Leopards 16-4 in the opening frame, with 11 of the points off the hands of graduate student Lindsey Carey (Greenfield, N.H.). Junior Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman Reagan Madonia (Corrales, N.M.) recorded the Leopards' scores.
  • After a Golden Bears' basket was matched by a layup from Foster, marking an 18-6 score to begin the second quarter, WNE rattled off 13 straight points, with four of the points coming from junior Lilly Hedge (Guilford, Conn.) to mark a 31-6 game. After a basket for Wentworth, Hedge answered with three points of her own to bring the score 34-8 before Foster drained a layup to cut the Leopards' deficit to 34-10. The Golden Bears scored the next 9 points, with five of the points coming from graduate student Tara Laugeni (Woodbridge, Conn.), before a Foster layup marked a 43-12 score heading to the break.
  • The hosts opened the third quarter with 15 straight points, raising the score to 58-12, with seven of the points coming from Carey. The Leopards answered with five straight, including a three-pointer by Madonia, before another three-point play by WNE was answered with another Madonia three, marking a 61-20 score. Two points by the Golden Bears were answered with a Foster three-pointer to mark a 63-23 tally heading into the fourth quarter.
  • After six points for the Golden Bears opened the fourth frame, four points by sophomore Tita Rana (Boston, Mass.) cut the deficit to 69-27. WNE ended the night on a 10-2 run to hold off the Leopards for a 79-29 win. Carey led all scorers with 23 points, while Foster led Wentworth with 11.
