Women's Basketball Battles Suffolk

BOSTON, Mass. – A second-quarter surge from the Suffolk Rams women's basketball team (10-3, 4-2 CCC) guided the team to a 67-52 Commonwealth Coast Conference win over the Wentworth Institute of Technology (2-6, 0-4 CCC) Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Suffolk rattled off six straight points to open the contest before Wentworth cut the deficit to 6-2 on a score by freshman Reagan Madonia (Corrales, N.M.). After a three-pointer by freshman Jordan Moreau (North Kingstown, R.I.) extended the Rams' lead to 9-2, another Madonia make followed by a layup from junior Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) raised the score to 9-6.
  • The Rams' went on an 6-2 run following, with four points coming from senior Amanda DeAngelis (Londonderry, N.H.) before a three-pointer by junior Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) marked a 15-11 score. Suffolk ended the first quarter with another 6-2 run to hold a 21-13 lead.
  • Four straight points for Wentworth to begin the second quarter dwindled their deficit to 21-17 before the Rams scored 17 straight points, including seven from Moreau, to extend their lead to 38-17. Another three-pointer from Carroll marked a 38-20 score at the half.
  • After the two teams swapped scores to start the third quarter, Suffolk pushed the lead to 44-22 on a three by sophomore Colby Guinta (Manchester, N.H.) that was followed by a three from Madonia, bringing the score to 44-25. Guinta and graduate student Lauren Romito (Hauppauge, N.Y.) scored baskets to extend the Rams' lead to 48-25 before Romito and Foster traded baskets further to mark a 53-29 score.
  • After Carroll and Guinta traded scores to raise the score to 55-31, Carroll swished a three to cut the deficit to 55-34. The Leopards totaled four points in the final going of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 55-38.
  • Just over a minute into the fourth quarter, with the score at 57-39, Carroll sank another three to cut the deficit to 57-42. Suffolk scored five straight to take a 62-42 lead before three points apiece from Foster and Madonia cut the deficit to 14 at 62-48. The two teams traded baskets to wind down the quarter, with one final buzzer-beating three from Carroll marking a 67-52 final score.
  • DeAngelis led all scorers with 19 points, followed by Carroll's 17 points with 15 coming off a five three-pointers.
