Fast Start Paces Gordon over Women's Basketball

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Ami Rivera (Concord, N.H.) of the Gordon women's basketball team (3-12, 2-6 CCC) drained a game-high 23 points as the Scots outpaced the Wentworth Institute of Technology (3-8, 0-6 CCC) by a 74-48 score in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Ami Rivera opened the scoring for the Scots in the first frame, with her two being matched by another two from junior Brooke Carlson (Contoocook, N.H.), marking a 2-2 score. Wentworth took a 5-2 lead on a three by junior Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine). A Foster layup carried the lead to 7-4 before a three-pointer by Ami Rivera later tied the score at nine aside. Gordon took a 13-9 lead with all four points by senior Sydney Noyes (Newbury, Mass.). The Scots rattled off nine of the next 11 points to hold a 22-11 lead after the first quarter.
  • A Carlson make to begin the second quarter was matched by a jumper from junior Isabella Rivera (Concord, N.H.), bringing the score to 24-13 before a Carlson three was matched with a three by Ami Rivera, marking a 27-16 score. The two teams swapped scores to raise the score to 36-22 in favor of the Scots before the visitors ended the half on an 8-3 run, taking a 44-25 lead into the break.
  • Gordon opened the third quarter on a 6-1 run before a basket by freshman Aissata Conde (Brockton, Mass.) stopped the run at 50-28. Sophomore Naomi Nicholson (Eagle Mountain, Utah) drained a three to extend the lead to 53-28 before three points by Foster after two free throws for the Scots marked a 55-31 score. A make by Noyes was matched by two free throw makes for the Leopards, marking a 57-33 lead after three.
  • After Gordon scored the opening two of the fourth quarter, Wentworth rattled off six straight, with four by junior Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.), before Nicholson drained a three to mark a 62-39 score. Amoddio and Foster sank layups to cut the deficit to 62-43 before the Scots ended the game on a 12-5 run, with six points from Noyes, to take a 74-48 ball game.
  • Ami Rivera led both teams with 23 points while Foster followed and led the Leopards with 21 points. Noyes (16 points) and Nicholson (11 points) also tallied double-figures in the Black & Gold's setback.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Today marked the 48th all-time meeting between the two teams.
