Women's Basketball Falls to Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – A tight contest towards the start, the Roger Williams Hawks women's basketball team (16-8, 11-4 CCC) used a strong second-half surge to separate themselves from the Wentworth Institute of Technology (4-18, 0-15 CCC) in conference play Wednesday evening, resulting in a 64-39 final score.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After Wentworth set out to a 2-0 on a make by junior Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.), Roger Williams took a one-point edge on a three by sophomore Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.). The Hawks pushed their lead to 9-4 with a 6-2 run before four points by Amoddio cut the deficit to 9-8. Back-to-back baskets for the Hawks were match with two straight by the Leopards, raising the score to 13-12, before a Coppola make marked a 15-12 score after the opening frame.
  • Freshman Samantha Jones (Beverly, Mass.) scored to begin the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 15-14. After a make by freshman Meg Qualey (Woburn, Mass.) marked a 17-14 score, Wentworth knotted the game at 17-all on a three-point play by junior Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine). Roger Williams ended the quarter on a 9-3 run, including three points by Coppola, to take a 27-20 lead into the halfway point.
  • Roger Williams opened the third quarter with four straight points, pushing the lead to 31-20, before two points by sophomore Tita Rana (Boston, Mass.) cut the deficit to 31-22. The two teams traded scores, working the game to 35-26, before the hosts ended the frame on a 7-2 run, kickstarted by a make from senior Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.), to mark a 42-28 score after three quarters.
  • The two teams swapped scores to open the final quarter, with the Leopards gaining six points from freshman Reagan Madonia (Corrales, N.M.), to raise the score to 48-35. Roger Williams ended the contest on a 16-4 run, including five points from Galligan and another four from Qualey, to take the conference contest, 64-39.
  • Galligan led all scorers with 17 points, while Coppola and Amoddio followed with 12 apiece. Meanwhile, Jones recorded a career-high five steals for the Leopards.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Tonight marked the 65th all-time meeting between the two teams.
