BOSTON, Mass. – In a back-and-forth affair, the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team battled the Hartford Hawks to the final buzzer in their last contest of the 2023-24 season, resulting in a narrow 52-47 win for the Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Hartford got out to an initial 2-0 lead thanks to a basket by freshman Ava Naszimento (Secaucus, N.J.) before four points by freshman Samantha Jones (Beverly, Mass.) gave the hosts a 4-2 edge. The Hawks answered, taking a 7-4 lead and pushing it to 9-6 on a make by freshman Adrianna McCoy (Frisco, Texas).
  • A three by junior Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) and another two by junior Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.) knotted the score at 11 aside. Threes by Foster and junior Brooke Carlson (Contoocook, N.H.) gave Wentworth a 16-11 lead before a three by McCoy cut the deficit to 16-14 after the first quarter.
  • The two teams traded scores to begin the second frame, with the Leopards pushing the lead to 23-18 on a make by Jones. Hartford finished out the quarter on a 10-0 run to give themselves a 28-23 advantage at the halfway mark.
  • The two teams swapped scores to begin the third quarter, while down 33-27, a three by Foster later cut Wentworth's deficit to 33-30. Hartford outpaced Wentworth 8-4, with four points coming from Naszimento, before a three by Carlson marked a 41-37 deficit. Another three by Carlson cut the Leopards' deficit to just one heading into the final quarter.
  • The two teams traded scores to open the fourth quarter, with Hartford separating themselves with a 48-42 lead. A three by Carlson and two free throw makes cut the Leopards' deficit to one at 48-47 with 1:01 left. However, Wentworth failed to get on the board, surrendering four free throw makes extra, to end the game in a 52-47 final.
  • McCoy led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Carlson who scored 15 on 6-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-6 from three. Jones (13) and Foster (12) also tallied double-figures for the Black & Gold.
