WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – In a non-conference battle Thursday afternoon, three student-athletes scored three or more goals as the University of St. Joseph's (Conn.) women's lacrosse team pulled away from the Wentworth Institute of Technology, earning a 14-3 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Leopards broke the ice first as sophomore Maggie McCann (North Grafton, Mass.) found the back of the net exactly five minutes in, marking a 1-0 score. The Blue Jays rattled off three straight, capped with a goal from freshman Paige Rieger (New Fairfield, Conn.), to hold a 3-1 lead after the opening frame.
- Rieger pushed Saint Joseph's lead to 4-1 early in the second quarter before freshman Kiki Dempsey (Stonington, Conn.) scored for the Black & Gold to the cut the deficit to 4-2 at the 13:16 mark. The hosts went on a 3-0 run, marking a 7-2 lead, before a man-up tally by senior Kristina Arabatzis (Saco, Maine) slowed the roll at 7-3 by the 4:17 mark.
- St. Joseph's pulled away in the final two quarters, posting seven goals, including three apiece from freshman Anna LeGault (Colchester, Conn.) and freshman Reagan Buscetto (Montville, Conn.).
- Arabatzis picked up a game-high six ground balls while junior Jenny Montville (Plainville, Mass.) posted four draw controls. In goal, junior Lily Cohen (Cherry Hill, N.J.) made eight saves.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today marked the second all-time meeting between the two teams.
