BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Hayden Saunders (Old Saybrook, Conn.) made a career-high 13 saves between the pipes as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team battled the Gordon Fighting Scots in conference action Tuesday night, ultimately falling by a 13-6 score.
Prior to the game, the Leopards honored seniors Kristina Arabatzis (Saco, Maine) and McKenzie Matz (Longmeadow, Mass.) as part of senior night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth took a 1-0 lead early in the opening frame on a tally by sophomore Maggie McCann (North Grafton, Mass.) before Gordon responded with a 4-0 run, taking a 4-1 lead with 15 seconds left in the quarter.
- After Gordon added to their lead just over five minutes into the second quarter, freshman Kiki Dempsey (Stonington, Conn.) tallied for the Leopards with 3:52 left in the second frame, marking a 5-2 score heading into the halfway point.
- Junior Kaitlyn Mini (Malden, Mass.) scored two straight goals in the third quarter to extend Gordon's lead to 7-2 by the 4:31 mark before Dempsey and junior Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie (Laconia, N.H.) scored within 29 seconds of one another to cut the Leopards' deficit to 7-4 by the 3:42 mark. Another Mini tally pushed the Scots' lead to 8-4 by the end of the quarter.
- McCann dwindled Wentworth's deficit to 8-5 with another goal at the 12:06 mark of the fourth frame. However, Gordon ended the contest on a 5-1 run, including two goals from sophomore Caroline Piorkowski (Millis, Mass.), to hold off Wentworth, 13-6.
- Saunders led the Leopards defensively with a career-high 13 stops and chipped in three ground balls. Junior Jenny Montville (Plainville, Mass.) picked up a game-high eight ground balls while five different Leopards recorded a caused turnover.
