Women’s Soccer Drops Road Matchup With WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – Picking up a goal late in each half, Worcester Polytechnic Institute defeated the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team 2-0 Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • WPI had several attempts early, getting off three shots in the first two minutes of action. They followed it up with a corner kick attempt and a pair of shots on goal that were turned aside by sophomore Adrianna Arona (Westfield, Mass.)
  • Following three more saves by the sophomore, the Engineers got on the board in the 41st minute, when Elizabeth Rocco put a shot in the upper right corner to give the home team a 1-0 advantage that they took into the half.
  • WPI put a flurry of shots up early in the second half, but were turned aside each time. Wentworth was able to create a few opportunities with a pair of shots, but were unable to connect. Then in the 87th minute, the Engineers put the game away with a late goal by Lilly Proulx, who hit the upper left corner of the net to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
  • Arona made five saves on the night for Wentworth, while freshman Lily Cohen (Cherry Hill, N.J.) stopped seven shots.

THE SERIES:

  • This was the 21st  all-time meeting between the two programs, with WPI holding a 15-2-4 series advantage.
