Women's Soccer Notches First League Win

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Mckenzie Collins' (Seymour, Conn.) goal in the 60th minute of play snapped a scoreless tie and freshman Juliana Heaton (Swansea, Mass.) made two saves as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team picked up its first Commonwealth Coast Conference victory with a 1-0 triumph over Nichols Saturday afternoon on Sweeney Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth put pressure on early, with junior Madison Wolf (Falmouth, Maine) recording two shots on goal in a 10-minute span.
  • The Leopards held Nichols without a shot attempt for the first 29:37 and the Bison did not have a shot on goal until the 36:24 mark when Heaton saved an attempt by sophomore Khaylin Hatcher (Waterford, Conn.).
  • Wentworth had the final three shots of the opening frame, with freshman Lily Cohen's (Cherry Hill, N.J.) bid in the 41st minute hitting the crossbar.
  • The Bison had a pair of attempts go wide in a span of 3:36, which accounted for the first two shots of the second half.
  • After a Nichols foul, Collins took a direct kick from 20 yards out, just to the right of the center of the field. Her attempt beat a diving freshman Adie Hughes (Hampden, Maine) to the left to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
  • Wolf put a shot on net which, was saved by Hughes, in the 67th minute, while Nichols sophomore Grace Killman (Medway, Mass.) had a shot on net in the 78th minute.
  • The Bison had a pair of opportunities to generate offense late off free kicks after Wentworth fouls, however, could not get the equalizer.
  • Hughes made four saves for the Bison.

THE SERIES:

  • Today marked the 24th meeting between the two teams. Wentworth ran its series winning streak to nine and leads all-time, 16-6-2.
