EAST BOSTON, Mass. – Scoring a goal in the 49th minute of play, the Suffolk University women's soccer team (4-1-1) edged Wentworth Institute of Technology, 1-0, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both squads.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Suffolk had its first attempt in the sixth minute of play when a shot was stopped by freshman Claire Reif (Winter Springs, Fla.), After the Rams had a pair of shots go off target in the 12th and 13th minutes, Wentworth had its first scoring chance of the game as senior Lauren Bradley (Lumberton, N.J.) put a shot on net, which was saved by freshman Arden Ferrari-Henry (Atkinson, N.H.).
  • The teams traded chances in the 23rd and 24th minutes with Reif coming up with a save off a corner kick play in the 23rd minute and Ferrari-Henry stopping a Bradley shot less than a minute later. In the 40th and 42nd minutes, Reif stopped a pair of Suffolk shots, while sophomore Emily Hagen (Ellicott City, Md.) had a shot stopped as the half expired.
  • At the 48:20 mark, the hosts broke the ice. Junior Kylie Flynn (Stoughton, Mass.) served a corner kick towards the box where freshman Avery Porter (Portland, Ore.) put a shot past Reif.
  • The Black & Gold had a chance in the 74th minute as sophomore Jenny Montville (Plainville, Mass.) had a shot saved by Ferrari-Henry and, in the 78th minute, freshman Lily Carlson (New Braintree, Mass.) sent a shot off a freshman Briana Reid (Bridgewater, Mass.) corner kick towards the net, which was also saved by Ferrari-Henry.
  • Carlson's bid off a Reid corner in the 78th minute just missed the net, while, in the 84th minute, freshman Lili Rick (Janesville, Wisc.) had a defender on her in the box but was able to get a shot off that Ferrari-Henry made a diving stop on.
  • Reif made a career-high nine saves for Wentworth.

THE SERIES:

  • Tonight was the third all-time meeting between the two teams.
