MILTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team opened up the 2021 season with a Commonwealth Coast Conference match at Curry. The Colonels bested the Leopards, 6-3.
Wentworth had a 1-0 lead in doubles play as Curry defaulted No. 3 doubles. The Colonels took a 2-0 lead when senior Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.) teamed with junior Kayla Connors (Brockton, Mass.) to defeat freshman Kiara Hima (Oakville, Conn.) and junior Kirsten Gramajo (Boston, Mass.), 8-3. Freshman Alexandra Borkov (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Sophia Wiernusz (Collegeville, Pa.) squeaked past Leopard senior Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Morgan Collins (Warwick, R.I.), 8-7 (8-6) at No. 1.
The Leopards picked up their other two points by way of defaults at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Borkov defeated Sollecito, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1, Daigle defeated senior Hannah Erickson, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3, Wiernusz was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Collins at No. 2, while Connors bested senior CiCi Deakin (Standish, Maine), 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4.
Wentworth (0-1, 0-1 CCC) is at Gordon on Thursday.
