Women's Volleyball Posts a Pair of Wins

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team picked up its first two wins of the season – and the first two triumphs of head coach Matt Dugan's career – as the Leopards went 2-0 on the opening day of the 18th Greyhound Premiere Invitational, played at Moravian University. Wentworth rallied to defeat Baruch, 3-1, before earning a straight-set win (3-0) over Alvernia.

WENTWORTH 3, BARUCH 1:
After dropping the first set, 25-19, Wentworth came out and evened the match at 1-all with a 25-18 win in the second set. A back-and-forth third set gave Wentworth a 2-1 advantage before the Black & Gold scored the first seven points of the fourth set and never looked back, winning 25-8.

Junior Viviann Goulet (North Kingstown, R.I.) paced the offense with 10 kills, while junior Riley Waggoner (Simi Valley, Calif.) added nine. Freshman Helen Barthe (Blythewood, S.C.) and sophomore Lauren Edmiston (Hockessin, Del.) put down eight kills apiece. Freshman Lexi Zabloudil (London, Ohio) had 21 assists, classmate Ashley Cao (Morrisville, N.C.) had 11 assists and served three aces, and sophomore Megan Davies (Chandler, Ariz.) recorded 19 digs.

WENTWORTH 3, ALVERNIA 0:
A tightly contested first set eventually led to a 26-24 Leopard win in the opening set. Wentworth was ahead, 24-23, however, Alvernia staved off set point. Back-to-back points from the Black & Gold closed out the set. Wentworth won its first and sixth straight sets of the night with identical 25-20 scores.

The Leopard offense was balanced with Goulet and Waggoner recording six kills apiece. Senior Devin Neal (Loveland, Ohio) chipped in with five kills, while Barthe and freshman Ema Thompson (Lewiston, Idaho) had four kills each. Goulet also served six aces with Cao dishing out 16 assists and serving three aces. Davies added 18 digs in the win.

ALL-TIME SERIES:
Tonight was the first-ever meeting between Wentworth and Baruch and the first-ever meeting between the Leopards and Alvernia.

The Leopards look to claim the tournament title tomorrow morning when they play the host Greyhounds at 10:00 a.m.
