BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team picked up its first two wins of the season – and the first two triumphs of head coach Matt Dugan's career – as the Leopards went 2-0 on the opening day of the 18th Greyhound Premiere Invitational, played at Moravian University. Wentworth rallied to defeat Baruch, 3-1, before earning a straight-set win (3-0) over Alvernia.
WENTWORTH 3, BARUCH 1:
After dropping the first set, 25-19, Wentworth came out and evened the match at 1-all with a 25-18 win in the second set. A back-and-forth third set gave Wentworth a 2-1 advantage before the Black & Gold scored the first seven points of the fourth set and never looked back, winning 25-8.
Junior Viviann Goulet (North Kingstown, R.I.) paced the offense with 10 kills, while junior Riley Waggoner (Simi Valley, Calif.) added nine. Freshman Helen Barthe (Blythewood, S.C.) and sophomore Lauren Edmiston (Hockessin, Del.) put down eight kills apiece. WENTWORTH 3, ALVERNIA 0:
A tightly contested first set eventually led to a 26-24 Leopard win in the opening set. Wentworth was ahead, 24-23, however, Alvernia staved off set point. Back-to-back points from the Black & Gold closed out the set. Wentworth won its first and sixth straight sets of the night with identical 25-20 scores.
