WENTWORTH STAT LEADERS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After the teams battled to a tie score early on, the Lions took three straight points to grab a 6-3 lead. Following kills by junior Viviann Goulet (North Kingstown, R.I.) and sophomore Lauren Edmiston (Hockessin, Del.), the Leopards pulled within a point. Following two more kills by Edmiston and another by freshman Helen Barthe (Blythewood, S.C.), Wentworth pulled even at 13-13. But Emerson then went on a roll, going on a 9-3 run to take command of the set, and the Leopards were unable to make up the ground as the Lions took a 25-19 decision in the opening set.
  • Wentworth took a 3-1 lead to start off the second following a service ace from freshman Ashley Cao (Morrisville, N.C.). The visitors held their two point advantage until later in the set, when the Lions took four straight points to take a two point lead of their own. Wentworth tied the score at 13 after a kill by freshman Abby Maher (North Granby, Conn.) and an ace by Barthe, then went on to take a 19-17 lead after a pair of kills from junior Riley Waggoner (Simi Valley, Calif.). The Leopards held a 21-18 lead late in the set after a kill from freshman Lexi Zabloudil (London, Ohio), but Emerson once again came back. The Lions won the next three points to tie the set at 21, then following a Wentworth point took four of five to win the middle frame 25-23 and go up 2-0 in the match.
  • The teams traded points evenly early in the third set, as the squads were even at 7-7 in the early stages following a pair of aces from sophomore Megan Davies (Chandler, Ariz.) and Maher. Emerson then took the lead, which the Leopards cut down to one point after a pair of kills and an ace by Barthe. But the Lions then created separation with an 8-1 run that gave the home team a 21-13 lead. Wentworth made a late push to get back in the set, but were unable to come back as Emerson held on for a 25-20 victory to win the set and the match.

THE SERIES:

  • This was the 17th meeting in history between the two programs. Emerson now holds a 10-7 lead in the series.
