Baseball Opens Conference Play at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team opened Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Sunday afternoon against Salve Regina. Salve swept the doubleheader, winning 22-2 and 16-5.


GAME ONE:  Salve Regina 22, Wentworth 2 (7)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Playing as the visiting team, Salve Regina put two runs on the top of the board in the first inning, thanks to an RBI triple and an RBI single. An inning later, the Seahawks added tot heir lead with a solo home run.
  • Salve Regina broke the game open with 15 runs over the next three innings, taking an 18-0 lead in the fifth inning.
  • Wentworth got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring a pair of runs. Freshman Matthew Favazzo (Lexington, Mass.) led off with a single and, with one out, sophomore Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) doubled Favazzo to third. Freshman Mike Sibert (Billerica, Mass.) followed with an RBI single, which plated Favazzo and Prisco followed with a run after an error.
  • The Seahawks scored four runs in the sixth and seventh innings, combined to complete the scoring.
  • Prisco was 2-for-2 with a walk, while Siebert was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Junior Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) took the loss (0-2) on the hill for the Black & Gold.


GAME TWO:  Salve Regina 16, Wentworth 5


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Using a pair of RBI doubles and an RBI single, Salve Regina took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. However, Wentworth came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 3-2. Prisco led off the inning with a single and, with one out, junior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) walked. Junior A.T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) followed with a double, which scored Prisco and moved Peruzzi to third. Peruzzi scored on a wild pitch which moved DiPina to third, however, back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning.
  • The Seahawks scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to go ahead 5-2 but the Leopards put a pair on the board in the bottom of the fifth to come back within a run. Senior Aaron Lundgren (Portsmouth, N.H.) led off with a single and, with two outs, Peruzzi singled which moved Lundgren to third. DiPina followed with a single to drive in Lundgren and, after graduate student Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, Peruzzi scored on a wild pitch.
  • Salve Regina extended its lead to 6-4 in the sixth inning before scoring 10 times over the final three innings.
  • DiPina was 2-for-4 with two RBI while junior Matt Rice (Scottsdale, Ariz.) drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning. Senior Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) took the loss (0-2) for the Black & Gold.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today marked 69th and 70yh all-time meetings between the two teams.
