Baseball Edged Twice at Curry

MILTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team battled Curry in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, with the host Colonels taking a pair of wins; 2-1 and 3-1.

GAME ONE:  Curry 2, Wentworth 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Curry scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Brandon Polanco (Brownsville, N.Y.). had an RBI double and junior Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.) had an RBI single. An inning later the Colonels threatened with runners at second and third, and on a flyout to center, graduate student Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) threw out junior Joan Peralta (Brownsville, N.Y.) at the plate for a double play,
  • In the fourth inning, Wentworth pulled to within 2-1. With one out, McManus singled, however was erased on a fielder's choice from senior Aaron Lundgren (Portsmouth, N.H.). Junior Zach Smith (Madison, N.H.) followed with an RBI double, which scored Lundgren.
  • The Colonels threatened in the fourth and fifth innings, leaving the bases loaded in the fifth. Wentworth left a pair of runner on in the seventh and eighth innings and, in the ninth inning, struck out twice around a ground out to end the game.
  • Senior Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) took the loss (0-3), allowing a pair of unearned runs and striking out six over seven innings. Five different student-athletes recorded hits, including Smith who also had an RBI.

GAME TWO:  Curry 3, Wentworth 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth jumped on the board first, scoring in the top of the second inning. McManus led off with a single and went to third when Smith reached on a two-base error. After both baserunners were erased when freshman Matthew Favazzo (Lexington, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice, junior Griffin Cournan (Pembroke, Mass.) singled. Freshman Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) followed with his first collegiate hit and drove in his first collegiate run when he singled in Favazzo.
  • Curry took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly from freshman Chris Faraca (Peabody, Mass.) and Polanco reaching on an error. However, the hosts left the bases loaded as junior Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) got a groundout to end the inning. With two outs in the sixth, the Colonels again loaded the bases but Farinas got the next two outs to keep it 2-1. An inning later, Curry made it 3-1 on a sacrifice fly.
  • Wentworth was unable to close the gap as the final 10 Leopards were retired in order.
  • Five different student-athletes recorded hits for the Black & Gold, including Cullinan who drove in a run. Freshman Alec Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) made his first collegiate start, going 3.1 innings and allowing one earned run and striking out four. Farinas allowed an unearned run and struck out four over the final 4.2 innings.
