NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – Junior Jake DelMonte (Southington, Conn.) went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles to help the WPI baseball team take a 9-5 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in non-conference action Monday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth jumped on the board in its first at bat, scoring three times. Freshman Mike Sibert (Billerica, Mass.) led off with a single and went to second when classmate Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) singled. Junior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) sent Sibert home when he doubled, a base hit that sent Cullinan to third. With one out, junior A.T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) grounded out to score Cullinan. Freshman Matt Robinson (Mystic, Conn.) singled to score Peruzzi, who had moved to third on the ground out. WPI drew within a run in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a bases-loaded fielder's choice and a passed ball.
- The Engineers tied the game in the bottom of the third when freshman Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, N.Y.) led off the inning with a home run. An inning later, sophomore Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, N.J.) hit a two-run home run and Zawacki had an RBI double, giving the hosts a 6-3 lead.
- WPI increased its lead to 9-3 in the fifth inning, with an RBI double from DelMonte, an RBI double from Burns, and an RBI single from freshman Shane McLaughlin (Brewster, N.Y.).
- Graduate student Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) led off the sixth inning with his first home run of the season to make it 9-4. DiPina doubled and went to third on a Robinson single. With one out, sophomore Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) grounded out which scored DiPina.
- Sibert and Robinson finished the day going 2-for-4. ON the hill, sophomore Brady Aubuchon (Westminster, Mass.) pitched the first four innings, falling to 1-3 on the season. Freshman Conor Whitehead (Southington, Conn.) allowed one run on four hits and struck out three in four innings.
