DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks on Monday as the Leopards were defeated by Wartburg, 7-2, and Marian (Wisc.), 6-5.
With the losses, the Leopards fall to 1-3 on the young season.
Wartburg 7, Wentworth 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After the first two batters reached in the bottom of the first, Wartburg had runners on second and third. A groundout put the Knights on the board and, with two outs an RBI double made it 2-0.
- Wentworth responded in the top of the second inning, tying the game at 2-all. Christian Roncal led off with a walk and went to second on a Matt Robinson single. Devon LaPierre followed with a bunt single to load the bases before Josh Turcotte doubled in Roncal and Robinson.
- The game remained tied until the third inning when an RBI single by the Knights put Wartburg ahead, 3-2. With the bases loaded in the seventh, back-to-back bases-loaded hit batters gave Wartburg a 5-2 lead, before adding two more in the eighth inning on an RBI double.
- Matthew Favazzo had a pair of hits, while Turcotte drove in both of Wentworth's runs. Matt Ferrara took the loss (0-1), allowing three runs on six hits and striking four in five innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Jake Prisco led off the game with a single and went to second with one out when Favazzo singled. Jake Samela followed with a double, which scored both Prisco and Favazzo.
- In the bottom of the inning, Marian used a based-loaded walk to cut the lead to 2-1.
- The top of the fifth saw the Leopards increase their lead to 3-1. With one out, LaPierre was hit by a pitch and a batter later Prisco was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Favazzo delivered a two-out single that scored LaPierre.
- The Sabres scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead with an RBI single and RBI double to tie the game and a two-run single to go on top.
- Wentworth responded with two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 5-all. With one out, LaPierre singled and went to second when Prisco drew a walk. A.T. DiPina flew out, which moved LaPierre to third before Favazzo walked to load the bases. Samela followed with a two-run double to even the score.
- After the Leopards went down in order in the ninth, Marian got back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases. A single up the middle gave the Sabres the win.
- Samela went 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Favazzo was 2-for-3. Bandon Farinas took the loss (0-1), pitching 2.1 innings and allowing one run on three hits.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was the second all-time meeting between Wentworth and Wartburg, while it was the first-ever meeting between Wentworth and Marian.
