Baseball Ends Spring Break Trip with Split Against Chatham
Leopards fall to Cougars in game one, 13-8, before bouncing back with an 8-2 win in the nightcap; Matt Ferrara pitched five strong innings in the win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Matt Ferrara allowed one unearned run and struck out four batters in the nightcap as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team finished its spring break trip with an 8-2 win over Chatham. In the opener, the Cougars prevailed, 13-8.
GAME ONE: Chatham 13, Wentworth 8
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless first two innings, Chatham scored seven times in the third inning using a two-run double, a two-run single, and three one-run singles.
- Wentworth got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Matt Robinson led off getting hit by a pitch and went to second on a wild pitch. Mike Sibert walked with one out and, with two outs, Sibert and Robinson each moved up on a wild pitch. Jake Samela walked to load the bases which was followed by a Matthew Favazzo bases-loaded walk to bring in Robinson. A.T. DiPina followed with a bases-clearing triple, making it 7-4.
- The Cougars added three in the top of the fifth, thanks to a two-run single and a one-run single, to take a 10-4 lead. In the home half of the inning, John Golebieski led off with a walk and went to second on a Robinson single. Cyle Archer was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Mike Sibert delivered a sacrifice fly, making it 10-5. With two outs, Jake Samela singled to bring in Robinson and make it 10-6. Favazzo drove in Archer with a single, bringing the Black & Gold to within three (10-7).
- After Chatham scored three times in the top of the seventh, Wentworth got an RBI single from Favazzo to score Christian Roncal, who had drawn a one-out walk.
- Favazzo went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Samela was also 2-for-4 with one RBI. DiPina drove in three runs. Nigel Cross took the loss (1-1).
GAME TWO: Wentworth 8, Chatham 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With one out in the top of the second inning, the Leopards loaded the bases on a Jake Prisco walk, a Robinson walk, and an infield single from Archer. Sibert followed with a two-run double to score Prisco and Robinson and Roncal scored Archer on a ground out. Sibert came around to score on a double from Favazzo, giving the Leopards a 4-0 lead. An inning later, Robinson blasted a home run, putting the Black & gold on top, 5-0.
- Chatham got a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double but Wentworth added a pair in the sixth, thanks to an RBI double from Roncal and an RBI double from DiPina.
- In the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars loaded the bases but Connor Whitehead came in in relief, and, after allowing an inherited runner to score on a wild pitch, induced a ground out and got a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.
- Wentworth picked up a run in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Archer singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Sibert walked which was followed by Roncal reaching on an error to score Archer.
- Ferrara picked up the win (1-1) with his five innings of work. Whitehead pitched two innings, yielding one walk and striking out two. At the plate, Roncal was 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Sibert was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Samela and Archer each had two hits.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
