Worcester State Spoils Baseball's Home Opener
Lancers snap a 4-all tie with four runs in the top of the ninth inning in an 8-5 win

WEYMOUTH, Mass. - The Worcester State University baseball team scored four times in the top of the ninth inning to snap a 4-all tie and defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology, 8-5, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Worcester State put up a pair of runs in the top of the second. With two out, back-to-back hit batters placed runners on first and second. A two-run double from Jeremy DeLacruz put the Lancers on top, 2-0.
- Wentworth got on the board in the bottom of the third, thanks to an RBI double from Jake Samela. With one out, Matt Robinson singled and went to second when Mike Sibert reached on an error. Jake Prisco flied out, moving Robinson to third and he came around to score on Samela's double. However, with runners on second and third, Wentworth was unable to get the tying run across.
- The Lacners tacked onto their lead in the top of the fourth, thanks to a two-run home run from Riggs Catlin, which also scored Tyler Normandie.
- Robinson led off the fifth inning with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. After Siebert walked, Prisco grounded out which moved both runners up 90 feet and Robinson made it 4-2 when Samela drove him in.
- The Black & Gold tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a pair of RBI singles. Samela led off the inning with a walk and went to third on a Matthew Favazzo single. With one out. Christian Roncal singled in Samela, which was followed by Favazzo coming around to score on a John Golebieski RBI single.
- Catlin put Worcester State ahead with an RBI single in the top of the ninth. A run came across on a wild pitch and an RBI double and an RBI single accounted for the other two runs.
- Wentworth did not go quietly in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Prisco singled and went to second on a walk by Samela. Favazzo singled to load the bases and Prisco scored when A.T. DiPina reached on a fielder's choice. With the tying run at the plate, a fly out ended the game.
- Samela went 2-for-5 with a pair of walks and two RBI. Favazzo and Robinson each delivered two hits apiece.
- Alec Peruzzi started for the Leopards, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out six. Chase Carder took the loss (0-1), allowing four runs on two hits and striking out three.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was the sixth all-time meeting between the two teams and the first since March 15, 2014. The series is even at 3-3.
