WEYMOUTH, Mass. – Nigel Cross hurled a complete-game shutout, which included matching a career high with eight strikeouts, and Josh Turcotte went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team defeated Vermont State University – Lyndon, 8-0, Friday afternoon at Libby Field.
With the win the Leopards improve to 3-9 on the season while the Hornets fall to 2-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth nearly got on the board in the first inning but left the bases loaded. Christian Roncal led off with a single and stole second. After a fielder's choice by Jake Samela erased Roncal, Samela took second on a wild pitch and, with two outs, a pitch hit A.T. DiPina and Jake Bartlett walked. However, Lyndon got a foul out to end the inning. An inning later, the Leopards had runners on first and third with two outs, however, were unable to capitalize.
- The Black & Gold put a pair on the board in the fourth inning. With one out, Nick Tiani walked and came around to score when Turcotte tripled. Turcotte came home to score when Alex Dayton drove him in with a sacrifice fly.
- Wentworth broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring five times to extend their lead to 7-0. Samela led off with a single and scored on a Matthew Favazzo double. Favazzo went to third and scored on a sacrifice fly from DiPina. With two outs, Nick Cullinan singled and went to second when Tiani reached on an error. Turcotte singled in Cullinan and moved Tiani to second. Dayton walked to load the bases and two runs came in by way of an error when Roncal reached on a fielder's choice.
- The Hornets threatened in the top of the sixth but Cross stranded runners at first and second. In the seventh inning, Tiani led off with a single and went to second after a one-out single by Dayton. An infield hit by Roncal loaded the bases and Samela drove in Tiani with a sacrifice fly.
- Cross improved to 2-1 on the season, scattering six hits in the complete-game win. After giving up a leadoff single, he set down 14 batters in a row – seven of those coming by way of the strikeout.
- In addition to Turcotte's three hits, Roncal had a pair of hits, while Dayton was 1-for-1 and drew a pair of walks.
