WALTHAM, Mass. – Three student-athletes each had a pair of hits and four pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout as the Brandeis University baseball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 6-0, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.
With the win the Judges improve to 6-8 on the season while the Leopards fall to 3-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Brandeis did most of its scoring in the first inning, coming around to score four times, with two of the runs coming on a two-run, two-out single off the bat of Jake Freed. The Judges threatened in the second inning, putting two runners on with one out, however, Alec Peruzzi got the next two batters out to end the inning.
- With two outs in the fourth inning, A.T. DiPina singled and went to second on a John Golebieski single. The threat ended when a groundout ended the inning. The sixth inning saw Matthew Favazzo get hit by a pitch with one out and stole second. DiPina walked and both runners moved up on a ground out. A fly out ended Wentworth's chances to get on the board.
- The Black & Gold had their best chance to score in the seventh inning, but left the bases loaded. Josh Turcotte led off with a double and Nick Tiani was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second. With one out, Christian Roncal singled to load the bases and Jake Samela reached on a fielder's voice when Turcotte was out on the force play at the plate. A fly out ended the inning.
- Brandeis scored a run in the seventh on an RBI double and added one more in the eighth on an RBI single.
- Roncal, DiPina, Golebieski, Turcotte, Alex Dayton, and Nick Cullinan each had hits for Wentworth, with DiPina reaching base a second time with a walk. Peruzzi took the loss (0-1), allowing four runs on four hits in two innings. Brady Aubuchon and Nigel Cross combined to pitch four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out a pair.
