Baseball Holds off Late Elms Rally
Leopards fend off Blazers, 8-6; Devon Lapierre and Cyle Archer each record three hits; Matt Ferrara improves to 2-1 on the hill

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Devon Lapierre and Cyle Archer each recorded three hits as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team held on for an 8-6 win over Elms in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.
With the win the Leopards improve to 4-10, while the Blazers fall to 5-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Jake Samela led off the third inning and doubled, which was followed by an RBI double from Matthew Favazzo. Favazzo came around to score when A.T. DiPina reached on an error and went to third. Christina Roncal grounded out, which scored DiPina and gave Wentworth a 3-0 lead.
- In the home half of the inning, Elms tied the game with a sacrifice fly by Brycen Diaz and a two-run double off the bat of Jacob Perez.
- The Leopards regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three times to jump on top, 6-3. Archer and Lapierre singled, with Archer going to third on Lapierre's base hit. Lapierre got himself into scoring position with a steal of second and a two-run double by Favazzo brought them both home. DiPina followed with a triple, which plated Favazzo.
- Elms scored twice in the home half of the fourth. AJ Cook had an RBI double and Camron Watkins delivered a sacrifice fly.
- The Black & Gold added a single run in the top of the sixth as Lapierre led off with a double, went to third on an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Samela. Wentworth upped its lead to 8-5 in the eighth when Favazzo scored Lapierre on a sacrifice fly.
- With two out in the bottom of the ninth, the Blazers loaded the bases and got a bases-loaded walk from Nason Busca to make it 8-6. However, Conor Whitehead got a strikeout to end the game.
- In addition to his three hits, Lapierre scored three times and stole three bases. Favazzo had a pair of doubles as well as driving in four runs. Samela and Josh Turcotte also each had two hits for the Leopards.
- Matt Ferrara improved to 2-1 on the season, allowing one run on five hits and striking out three in four innings of relief. Chase Carder got the start, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out six in three innings. Jacon DeCoste pitched a scoreless eighth inning before Whitehead earned his first save, allowing one run on two hits and striking out a pair in the ninth.
