BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Dan DeVaux (Wethersfield, Conn.) netted a team-high 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team pick up a 75-54 win over Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Wednesday night.
With the win the Leopards even their record at 12-12 overall and sit at 10-7 in league play while the Colonels fall to 1-23 (0-17).
Junior Jason Ganley (Northbridge, Mass.) and Curry junior John Coleman (Warwick, R.I.) traded baskets to open the game, however a Ganley layup ignited a 9-0 run which snapped the tie and gave Wentworth an 11-2 lead with 17:24 left in the half.
A pair of free throws from sophomore Ryan Beatty (Rochester, Mass.) halted the run, however one of two free throws from freshman Matt Vartanian (Salem, N.H.) and a three pointer from junior Cesar Fulcar (Watertown, Mass.) pushed the lead to 13. The Leopards would lead by as many as 19 on a pair of occasions as junior Sam Knollmeyer (Hampton, N.H.) knocked down a jumper with five minutes left and classmate Michael Boaheng (Worcester, Mass.) caused a turnover and put home the layup with just over two minutes left in the half.
Wentworth, which shot just under 50 percent from the floor and held Curry to 22.6 percent, had a 37-22 advantage at the break.
After Boaheng opened the second half with a basket, Curry scored the next four points – all from freshman Kieran Carroll (Greenwich, Conn.) – to make it a 13-point game. However, Wentworth used a 9-0 run and took a 48-26 lead on a DeVaux basket with 16:18 left. DeVaux had five of his team's nine points during the run.
Curry responded with a 13-2 run, which included eight points from Beatty, to cut the lead to 11 (50-39) with 13:02 left. Out of a timeout, junior Jovanny Lamisere (Waltham, Mass.) made a layup which started a 6-0 spurt and brought the lead back to 17. The Colonels knocked the lead down to as few as 13 with 8:19 left, however Wentworth extended its lead with a 12-2 run, taking a 23-point (70-47) lead with 4:22 left and never looked back.
In addition to DeVaux's 15 points, freshman Stephen Azums (Hyde Park, Mass.) had 12 points and eight rebounds while Fulcar had nine points and six assists. Junior Ben Kizel (Short Hills, N.J.) had four points, six rebounds, and eight assists. Wentworth had a 48-32 rebounding advantage and held Curry to 32.3 percent shooting for the game.
Carroll led all scorers with 16 points to go along with seven rebounds while Beatty added 12 points.
