BOSTON, Mass. – After finishing the regular season with a 14-11 overall record and a 10-8 mark in Commonwealth Coast Conference play, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team has earned the number six seed in the CCC Tournament and will square off against third-seeded Endicott (17-8, 12-6 CCC) on Tuesday (February 20) at 5:30 p.m., in Beverly, Mass.
The Leopards ended conference play tied for fifth with the University of New England, however the Nor'Easters earned the number five seed by virtue of the second tiebreaker. The two teams split their regular-season meetings, however UNE split with top-seeded Nichols while Wentworth went 0-2.
For the fifth consecutive season, Nichols enters the tournament as the top seed (22-3, 16-2), while Gordon (17-8, 13-5) is the number two seed and Roger Williams (17-8, 11-7) claims the number four seed.
In other quarterfinal action, Nichols will host eighth-seeded Western New England (11-14, 7-11), second-seeded Gordon will face seventh-seeded Salve Regina (10-15, 7-11), and Roger Williams will entertain the fifth-seeded Nor'Easters (12-13, 10-8). While Salve Regina and Western New England finished tied for seventh, the Seahawks earned the number seven seed by virtue of a 2-0 record against the Golden Bears.
The winners of the quarterfinal games will meet in the semifinal round on Thursday, Feb. 22. The winners of the Nichols-WNE and Roger Williams-UNE games will meet in one semifinal, while the winners of the Endicott-Wentworth and Gordon-Salve contests will play in the other. Start times for the semifinals will be determined following the completion of the quarterfinals.
The two semifinal winners earn a trip to the CCC Men's Basketball Championship which takes place on Saturday, Feb. 24. The winner will be named the CCC Tournament Champion will receive the conference's automatic qualifier into the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship.
Tuesday's game will be the 37th all-time between the Leopards and the Gulls with Endicott holding a 26-10 all-time series advantage. Endicott has won the last four meetings between the two schools, including winning 76-56 in Boston on January 6 and taking a 69-56 decision in Beverly on February 10. Included in those 36 previous meetings are four CCC Tournament games. The Gulls are 3-1 in those contests with the last coming in the 2015 CCC title game.
