Men's Basketball Defeated by Gordon in League Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Eric Demers (Pflugerville, Texas) led three players in double figures as the Gordon College men's basketball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 66-47, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Wednesday night.

With the win the Fighting Scots 4-1 overall and 1-0 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 1-4 (0-1).

Using an 11-2 run, Gordon took an 11-5 lead with 14:17 left in the opening half after a layup from senior Garrison Duvivier (Brockton, Mass.). The Fighting Scots extended the lead to 14-7 after a transition basket from senior Noah Szilagyi (Barkhamsted, Conn.) with 12:17 remaining, however, back-to-back three pointers from senior Zach Bergeon (Litchfield, N.H.) and sophomore Gavin Keough (Dunstable, Mass.) pulled the hosts within one.

A Demers layup capped off a 10-2 run and gave Gordon a 24-15 lead with 6:36 remaining before sophomore Kyle Henseler (Coventry, R.I.) knocked down a three to make it a six-point contest with just under five minutes left. The Fighting Scots took their largest lead of the half (32-20) with 2:31 to play after a senior Jake Haar (Dorchester, Mass.) three which would also be the final points scored by either team in the opening frame.

Gordon opened the second half on an 8-2 run and took a 40-22 lead after a Demers layup 3:47 into the half. Wentworth whittled the lead to 13 when junior Matt Vartanian (Salem, N.H.) hit one of two free throws, however, a five-point burst by the Fighting Scots pushed the lead back to 18. Two free throws from junior Stephen Azums (Hyde Park, Mass.) with 6:43 remaining brought the lead to 15, however, that would be as close as the hosts would get as an 11-2 run extended the lead to 24.

In addition to his 20 points, Demers also grabbed five rebounds. Szilagyi added 13 points while sophomore Parker Omslaer (Jackson, N.J.) scored 10 points. Duvivier had a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals.

Azums and Henseler each scored eight points for Wentworth with Azums grabbing 10 rebounds.

Both teams are in action on Saturday. Wentworth hosts Western New England while Gordon hosts Curry.
