Men's Basketball Rolls to Road Win over Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – Five student-athletes scored in double figures, including sophomore Jack Connell (Walpole, Mass.) who netted a team-high 15 as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated Salve Regina, 83-63, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After falling behind, 5-2, to open the game, Wentworth used a 15-1 run and took a 17-6 lead on a senior Jack Schaake (Hampton, N.H.) dunk with 10:18 left in the half. The Leopards built their lead to 15 with 3:08 left on a sophomore Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.) dunk.
  • Salve Regina scored the next seven points, cutting the lead to eight (27-19) on a pair of graduate student Mikey Spencer (Abington, Mass.) free throws with 2:10 left before a layup by Stewart started a 7-1 run to conclude the half and gave the Black & Gold a 34-20 lead at the break.
  • Four straight points from Schaake and a three pointer from Connell extended Wentworth's lead to 41-20 just over two minutes into the second half. The Leopards maintained a 20 or higher point lead until junior Jack Kruse (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) hit a three just outside the midway point of the second half, which cut the lead to 18. Connell's three with 4:20 left gave the visitors their largest lead of the game, 78-45.
  • The Black & Gold shot 57.1 percent from the floor in the second half and 52.6 percent for the game. Wentworth had a 47-32 edge on the glass.
  • In addition to Connell's 15 points, senior Sam Swift scored 14, Stewart added 13, Schaake netted 12, and Rubenskas had 11. Stewart and Schaake had nine and eight rebounds, respectively.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Today was the 71st all-time meeting between the two teams. Salve Regina leads, 37-34 as the two teams split the season series for the third time in the last four seasons.
