NEWTON, Mass. – In an overtime thriller Monday night, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team (3-1) outlasted the Lasell Lasers (3-2) by an 86-85 score as three student-athletes recorded 20 or more points for the Black & Gold.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Leopards struck first 24 seconds into the night on a three by junior Nathaniel Smith (Beacon Falls, Conn.). Lasell matched the score with a three of their own before the two teams traded points, with the Lasers taking an 11-9 edge before a three pointer by junior Jack Connell (Walpole, Mass.) gave Wentworth a 12-11 lead. The Lasers separated themselves, taking an 18-12 lead thanks to help of five points from junior Marcus Lewis (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.).
  • A three-pointer by senior Sam Goy (Derry, N.H.) cut the deficit to five before another three for the Leopards dwindled the deficit to two at 20-18. Lasell continued to hold their two-point lead as the teams traded scores, working the score up to 26-22, before five points from Goy gave Wentworth a 27-26 edge.
  • Four points from Connell and five from Goy let the Leopards eventually stretch their lead to 36-30 before a layup by Lewis capped a 6-0 run for the Lasers to tie the score. A layup by Smith brought the Leopards to a 38-36 lead heading into the break.
  • Two points from Lewis helped give Lasell a 40-38 lead to start the second half before four points by junior Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.), sandwiching a Lasell three-pointer, cut the deficit to one at 43-42. After later tying the score at 45-all, Lasell took a three-point lead on a shot from beyond the arc by sophomore Quinton Partee Jr. (Roswell, Ga.), marking a 48-45 score. The two teams traded points to a 52-51 lead for the Lasers before Wentworth went on a 15-4 run to take a 66-56 advantage.
  • A three-pointer by freshman Andy Madesko (Sandy Springs, Ga.) cut the deficit to 66-59 before the two teams traded scores to a 70-65 lead for the Leopards. Back-to-back threes for Lewis and another three from Madesko gave the Lasers a 73-70 lead, but a three by Goy tied the score at 73-all after two halves of play.
  • The two teams swapped baskets to begin the extra frame before two baskets, one each by Goy and Stewart, gave the Leopards a 79-75 lead. The Lasers battled back, behind later 81-79, but a three by Goy stretched the Leopards' lead to 84-79. A three by Lewis cut the deficit to two at 84-82 before Lasell grabbed a 85-84 edge thanks to three points by freshman Che Hanks (Chelsea, Mass.). Two free throws by Stewart with seconds on the clock sealed Wentworth a thrilling 86-85 win.
  • Lewis led all scorers with 36 points, while Goy (22, 8-11 FG), Stewart (22), and Connell (20) led the Black & Gold. Stewart also led the Leopards with 12 rebounds, good for a double-double.
