BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Sean Racette (Trumbull, Conn.) dropped a career-high 11 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the floor as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team (8-10, 4-6 CCC) got out to an early lead and never looked back, downing the Curry Colonels (8-10, 2-8 CCC) 72-58 in league play Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth opened the game with a 3-0 lead on a three by senior Sam Goy (Derry, N.H.) before Curry sliced the lead to one on a make by senior Lowelle Torres (Vineland, N.J.). Ahead 6-5, a make by junior Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.) extended Wentworth's lead to 8-5 before a three by junior Jack Connell (Walpole, Mass.) after two Curry free throw makes marked an 11-7 score.
- Ahead 11-9, makes by Racette and Goy marked a 15-9 lead before a Torres three cut the deficit to 15-12. The Leopards then went on an 18-5 run, including seven from Connell and two threes by sophomore Nathan Brinkman (Trumbull, Conn.), to take a 33-17 advantage. The Colonels responded with a 17-3 run of their own, including six points by sophomore Jason Romans (Peabody, Mass.) to mark a 36-34 score at the break.
- Ten points by Stewart helped Wentworth extend their lead to 46-37 in the second half of play. A three-point play by sophomore Russell Dolabany (Westwood, Mass.) extended the lead to 49-37 before the Leopards continued the advantage to 53-39. After a make by senior Nick Johnson (Athens, Ga.) cut the deficit to 53-41, a make by Racette marked a 55-41 score.
- After a Romans' basket later marked a 57-47 deficit, four points by Racette kickstarted eight straight points for Wentworth, marking a 65-47 lead. The two teams swapped scores to end the game, with the Leopards never surrendering their lead, taking the game 72-58.
- Seven of Racette's 11 points came in the second half, while Stewart led all scorers with 20 points and notched a double-double with 15 boards. Romans led the Colonels with 18 points.
