Fighting Scots take 80-75 decision from the Leopards, despite a late Wentworth run

WENHAM, Mass. – Bernie McGuinness tallied a game-high 27 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the floor as the Gordon College men's basketball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 80-75, in Conference of New England play Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Fighting Scots improve to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in CNE play, while the Leopards are currently 2-11 (1-5).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Gordon jumped out to an 8-4 lead after a Bryce Smith three pointer but a three from Nathan Brinkman and a layup from Nathaniel Smith put Wentworth on top, 9-8. Tyler Stewart twice tied the game for the Leopards, including on a layup to make it 14-14 but the Fighting Scots used a 10-2 run to take a 24-16 lead after an Isaac Jarvis layup with 10:27 left.
- The hosts extended their lead to as many as nine with 4:38 left with the Black & Gold pulling back to within six on a pair of occasions, including on a Niko Rosich jumper with 2:23 left in the half. A three-point play by Alex Daniel put Gordon ahead, 39-30, at the break.
- Early in the second half, the Fighting Scots built their lead to 11 on a pair of occasions with Stewart knocking down two free throws with 17:13 left to bring the lead back to single digits. A layup from Daniel started a 9-2 run that haw Gordon take its largest lead of the contest (52-36) after a McGuiness jumper with 15:30 left in the contest.
- Stewart countered with a layup to start a 12-1 run and saw the Leopards pull within four (53-49) after a Jack Connell layup with 12:03 left. Using a 14-4 run, the hosts built their lead back to 14 points with 8:29 left after a three from McGuinness. Wentworth pulled within nine on a pair of Russell Dolabany free throws with 2:20 left and, after two free throws from Smith, Stewart made a pair of free throws, and Dolabany and Rosich made layups to bring the Leopards to within five with 1:22 remaining. Four Fighting Scot free throws sandwiched around a layup by Stewart made it 79-72 with 34 seconds left.
- In addition to McGuinness' 27 points, Daniel scored 16 and Jarvis added 10.
- Stewart recorded a double-double, scoring 24 points (9-for-12 shooting) and grabbing 10 rebounds. Dolabany tallied 17 points, while Brinkman had six steals.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was the 69th all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth has won four of the previous five meetings.
