Men’s Basketball Routs UNE, 95-53
Dominant start carries Leopards to conference win; Russell Dolabany leads all scorers with 22 points, followed by Jack Connell with 20
BOSTON, Mass. – 14 different student-athletes registered a point while three led in double-figures as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team rolled past the University of New England Nor'Easters by a 95-53 score in Conference of New England play Tuesday night.
The Black & Gold, winners of three straight and seven of their last nine, improve to 9-13 overall (8-7 CNE). The Nor'Easters fall to 6-16 (4-11 CNE).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Leopards raced out with an 8-2 run to open the night, featuring five points by Nathan Brinkman, before UNE later closed the gap at 10-7. From there, Wentworth rattled off 12 straight, featuring four from Tyler Stewart and another three each from Brinkman and Niko Rosich, to push their lead to 22-7.
- The two teams swapped scores to a 26-12 game before threes by Nathaniel Smith and Connell extended the advantage to 34-13. A Jaelen Jackson layup cut the deficit by two before the two teams again traded points, raising the score to 36-19. The Black & Gold ended the frame with a 9-2 run, featuring four points from Connell and another three by Russell Dolabany, to hold a 45-21 lead at the break.
- Five straight for Wentworth to open the second half was answered with a three by Zach Boulay, marking a 50-24 game, before the Leopards scored another four straight to a 54-24 score. Two Jackson layups sandwiched a make by Dolabany, raising the score to 56-28, before the Black & Gold endured a 9-1 run to stretch the lead to 65-29.
- After a Dolabany make marked a 67-30 score, a Boulay three was followed by a 6-1 run for the Leopards to mark a 73-34 game. A three-point play by Jackson cut the deficit before a Rosich three later on pushed the game to 78-39. UNE rattled off a 10-2 run to slice the deficit to 80-49 on a Jackson jumper. The Leopards finished the contest with a 15-6 run, featuring a four-point play by Dolabany and a trifecta by Dylan Olson.
- Dolabany led all scorers with 22 points followed by Connell who had 20 points alongside five assists. Jackson was the lone Nor'Easter to score double-figures, dropping 18 points. Stewart chipped in another 14 points for the Leopards while shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor.
- The Black & Gold held a 46-36 rebounding advantage and fended off the Nor'Easters to just a 30.9 field goal percentage.
NOTEWORTHY
- Connell scored his 1,500th career point in the game. He is one of just five Wentworth men's basketball student-athletes to accomplish this feat.
SERIES NOTES:
- Wentworth has won seven straight matchups over UNE, including an 89-73 win back on January 22.
