CANTON, Mass. – The Curry Colonels men's ice hockey team (7-2-1, 5-2 CCC) used a three-goal first period, with all three goals within a 5:15 span, to fend off the Wentworth Institute of Technology (3-7, 1-6 CCC) by a 3-1 score in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Colonels broke the ice 3:42 into the opening frame as sophomore Gage Dill (Estero, Fla.) fired a wrister to the twine off of a feed from junior Eelis Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland), giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
- Curry added to their lead as a streaking freshman Blake Rothstein (Massapequa, N.Y.) beat senior Will Oliver (Chestefield, Mo.) in the low slot, marking a 2-0 score.
- The hosts raised their lead to 3-0 8:57 into the first period on the power play as sophomore Jesse Galassi (Lockport, N.Y.) put home a one-time feed from graduate student Austan Bellefeuille (Framingham, Mass.).
- A scoreless second period featured a 12-3 shot advantage in favor of the Leopards.
- The Leopards cut the deficit to two 3:44 into the third period as a rebound try by sophomore Travis Marchant (Londonderry, N.H.) on an initial shot by junior Jacob Shankar (Johnstown, Ont.) found the back of the net on the powerplay, dwindling the Black & Gold's deficit to 3-1.
- The Leopards couldn't get past freshman Shane Soderwall (Algonquin, Ill.) down the stretch, despite the visitors outshooting the Colonels 28-22. Soderwall made 27 stops for the hosts while Oliver turned nine aside before sophomore Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.) stopped all ten shots he faced in relief.
