Late Tufts' Goal Sinks Hockey in Boston Landing Invitational Opener
Jumbos score with 2:33 left in regulation; hold on for 5-3 win
January 6, 2024
BRIGHTON, Mass. – A late goal by sophomore Liam O'Hare (Barcelona, Spain) stopped the comeback attempt for the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team (5-9) as the Leopards suffered a 5-3 setback to the Tufts Jumbos (5-4-1) in their opening tilt of the Boston Landing Invitational at Warrior Arena Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A scoreless first period featured a 13-11 advantage in shots for the Jumbos, while Wentworth owned a 10-9 edge in faceoffs.
- Just under six minutes into the second, the Leopards broke the scoreless tie as sophomore Seth Robinson (Haverhill, Mass.) ripped a shot far side on an odd man rush that beat senior Peyton Durand (Newport, R.I.) low to give the Black & Gold a 1-0 lead.
- Tufts knotted the score at one-all at the 11:08 mark of the second period as a point shot by senior Sam Miller (Milwaukee, Wis.) squeaked by sophomore Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.).
- Tufts took a 2-1 lead just 13 seconds after Miller's tally as a loose puck from the corner found senior Aidan Lovett (Abington, Mass.) out front with Lovett cashing in from the low slot.
- The Jumbos scored their third mark of the second period as sophomore Cole Dubicki (Seattle, Wash.) crashed the crease and potted the loose puck to give Tufts a 3-1 lead at the 14:46 mark.
- Wentworth cut the deficit to 3-2 three minutes after Dubicki's score as junior Jacob Shankar (Johnstown, Ont.) scored on a two-on-one pass from sophomore Ian Worthley (Saugus, Mass.).
- 5:32 into the third, the Leopards tied the score at three-all as a point shot by freshman Desmond Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) found its way to the back of the net.
- The Jumbos took a 4-3 edge with 2:33 left in the third period as Dubicki's wrap-around try came up short but was scooped up and pushed past McGovern by O'Hare.
- An empty net tally by junior Harrison Bazianos (Glenview, Ill.) gave Tufts the insurance in a 5-3 score with 37 seconds to go. McGovern totaled 42 stops in the setback while Durand turned aside 31 in the win.

- Tonight marked the eighth all-time meeting between the two teams and first since 2013.
