January 27, 2024
EVERETT, Mass. – Junior George Weiner (Wayne, N.J.) of the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team (8-11-1, 4-8-1 CCC) sent home the game-winning goal in overtime to push the Black & Gold to their second-straight win over Western New England (4-14-2, 1-10-2 CCC) in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a quiet first period that featured an 11-7 shot advantage for the Leopards, the hosts broke the ice 8:10 into the second period as freshman Desmond Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) ripped a shot from the slot with the extra skater, giving the Black & Gold a 1-0 edge.
- The Golden Bears tied the game with five seconds left in the second frame as senior Billy Hefferle (Flanders, N.J.) tipped in a shot from the point by sophomore Jimmy Mettler (Bronx, N.Y.).
- The two teams couldn't gain any separation before the end of regulation, with Wentworth owning a 34-23 shot advantage heading into the extra frame.
- In overtime, a 2-on-1 rush featuring sophomore Nolan Lowe (Toronto, Ont.) and Weiner resulted in a back-door pass by Lowe to Weiner for the game-winner, giving Wentworth a 2-1 conference win.
- Senior Andrew LoRusso (Peabody, Mass.) made 34 saves in the setback for WNE, while sophomore Jack McGovern turned aside 22 shots in the win.
