Fast Start Paces Salve Regina over Hockey

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Sophomore Walter Baumann (Gate Mills, Ohio) tallied a hat-trick in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Sunday afternoon as the Salve Regina Seahawks men's ice hockey team (15-7-2, 10-5-2 CCC) downed the Wentworth Institute of Technology (9-14-1, 5-11-1 CCC) by a 7-1 score.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The Seahawks got on the board just 1:21 into the opening frame as senior Johnny Mulera (Rockville, Md.) streaked across the slot and fired a wrister to the twine, marking a 1-0 score.
• Salve Regina doubled their lead 27 seconds after the game's opening tally as sophomore Walter Baumann (Gate Mills, Ohio) scored similarly as Mulera, with his wrist shot beating sophomore Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.) up high to raise the score to 2-0.
• Wentworth cut the deficit to one at the 5:46 mark as freshman Ethan Lim (Coral Gables, Fla.) broke free of the Seahawks' defense on the rush, putting home a breakaway try for his first collegiate goal to mark a 2-1 deficit for the Black & Gold.
• Salve Regina regained their two-goal cushion with 3:14 left in the first as freshman Aidan Coupe (Gilbert, Ariz.) found the back of the net.
• Mulera pushed Salve Regina's lead to 4-1 at the 15:03 mark of the second period. 53 seconds later, Baumann scored his second of the game to mark a 5-1 score.
• Baumann found the back of the net for the third time with 2:26 to go in the second period, raising the score to 6-1.
• Salve Regina tucked home one more goal, just under five minutes in the third period, as they skated to a 7-1 win. McGovern made 26 saves for the Leopards before senior Will Oliver (Chesterfield, Mo.) turned 18 of 19 shots he faced aside. Senior Cayden Bailey (Estero, Fla.) made 18 saves for the Seahawks.
