Men's Ice Hockey Powers Past UMass Dartmouth in Season Opener
Leopards dominate Corsairs, 5-2, as Nolan Lowe and George Weiner register three points apiece in season opener
EVERETT, Mass. – Multiple student-athletes peppered the stat sheet as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team kicked off the 2024-2025 season with a dominant 5-2 win over UMass Dartmouth on home ice Friday night.
Both Nolan Lowe (goal, two assists) and George Weiner (three assists) led the efforts with three points each while Max Pineo (two goals) and Alex Walicki (goal, assist) added two points apiece in their respective Black & Gold debuts.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless first frame resulted in 14-13 shots on goal edge for the Leopards, the Corsairs broke the scoreless knot 2:58 into the second period on the powerplay as a tic-tac-toe play finished off with a tap-in by Alex Walker.
- Wentworth knotted up the score just 38 seconds later as a two-on-one featuring Ian Worthley and Walicki resulted in a back door tap in for the latter, accounting for his first collegiate goal.
- At the 12:05 mark, Pineo gave the Black & Gold their first lead of the night on a snipe to the twine from the top of the right circle. However, just 1:14 later, a streaking Collin Patterson found the net on the powerplay to tie the score at two aside.
- With just 2:21 left in the second, a loose scrum out front for the Leopards resulted in a backhand try from Lowe that proved to be successful, beating Graham Burke to give Wentworth a 3-2 edge heading into the third period.
- At the 4:25 mark of the third period, Pineo added to Wentworth's lead with another rip, marking a 4-2 score before Nicholas Ramm tipped home a shot by Walicki at the 9:04 mark, notching his first collegiate goal on the powerplay to give the hosts a 5-2 lead.
- Wentworth outshot UMass Dartmouth 43-28, including 20 in the second period's surge. Also making his collegiate debut was Topher Chirico, who made 26 saves between the pipes to preserve the win.
