Hockey Shut Out by Suffolk
Leopards fall to Rams, 2-0; Jack McGovern makes 27 saves
November 9, 2024
EVERETT, Mass. – The Suffolk University men's ice hockey team scored early in the second period and added an empty-net goal late in the contest to pick up a 2-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in College of New England action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Rams improve to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in league play while the Leopards even their record at 2-2 (1-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first period of today's game looked a lot like the first period of last night's tilt, with Suffolk peppering Wentworth with shots. Jack McGovern stood tall, turning aside 13 shots in the opening frame. Late in the period, Suffolk was whistled for a penalty, giving the Leopards a power play for the final minute of the period as well as into the second period.
- Just 18 seconds into the second period, the Rams got the only goal they would need as Scott McManus intercepted a pass at the blue line and skated in alone, beating McGovern and giving Suffolk a 1-0 lead. The Black & Gold had three quality scoring chances midway through the period, however, CJ Hapward came up with three saves.
- The third period was back-and-forth, however, neither team was able to crack the opposing goaltender. With 2:05 left, McGovern was pulled for an extra attacker. The Leopards had five shot attempts, including three on net but were unable to get the equalizer. A turnover in the attacking zone gave Suffolk the puck and Ralph Berry potted the empty-net marker with just under six seconds left to seal the win.
- Hapward made 22 saves while McGovern stopped 27 shots. Neither team converted on the man advantage with Suffolk going 0-for-3 and Wentworth going 0-for-2.
